The Kelvin Hotel opened on January 26th, 1965. It was the work of local architect Arthur Milne and built by Invercargill-based builder McLennan’s. Nestled in the bustling heart of central Invercargill, the hotel consists of 61 well-appointed rooms and offers quality accommodation and service.
Rumour has it that in 1965, The Rolling Stones played a concert in Invercargill and stayed in the Kelvin Hotel. In typical rock star recklessness, one of the band threw a bottle of wine from off the balcony at the side of the nearby Southland Times building.
This wasn’t the only bottle of wine thrown at that location. Only this time, the culprit wasn’t identified. A few decades later, bar staff witnessed an unseen force pick a bottle of Fickle Mistress (a popular Central Otago-made wine) up off the bar and throw it across the room.
The bar at the time was called ”Molly’s”. I’m told the ghost there was assumed to be Molly.
One former staff member stated, ”I remember that night when Molly hurled that bottle of wine across the bar. I will never forget that! There’s absolutely no way that was humanly possible!”
She is said to have had a few favourite and not-so-favourite patrons. One unwanted customer was thought to have been the reason for the bottle throw that day. On asking about the possibility that that bottle could have simply fallen off the bar, perhaps by being too close to the edge, I was told it was sitting well away from the edge and landed quite a distance from the bar.
Cutlery, too, would sometimes drop from set tables to the floor without any apparent reason.
