Our rather grand lodgings for the night.
Looks suitably spooky and it’s huge!
Lumley Castle is a 14th Century manor house turned castle, in County Durham, North East England.
The castle is said to play host to several ghosts. The most popular was Lily Lumley, who was allegedly murdered by two priests after she refused to follow the Catholic faith.
It is said she was then thrown down a well on the castle grounds. (We found the well, which is actually inside the building and not out on the surrounding grounds as I originally thought.)
Lily haunts the castle to this day, wandering the corridors and rooms and is often seen and heard by both guests and staff.
The castle made the headlines in 2005 when some of the Australian cricket team were spooked by strange occurrences and refused to sleep in their rooms. One member of the team was so terrified he fled his room and ran to the reception in just his underwear.
Another reported cricket incident was in 2000.
The West Indian cricket team whilst staying here, checked out of the hotel early because they were so unnerved by what was going on around them.
Lily is not the only ghost at the castle. There is a mischievous ghost known as Black Jack, that likes to play pranks on guests.
There have also been many reports of children heard talking, screaming, and laughing. Usually on the top floor.
A strange phantom man has also been sighted sitting in the corner of the bar, before disappearing.
OK, Lily, I’ve come a long way. Let’s talk!
Here are a few spooky photos I snapped off while exploring – Mark
