Paranormal NZ – Return to Whatipu – overnight explore and campout

Nov 15th 2025,  Paranormal NZ ‘s Sam, Jenn and Mark piled the cars with gear and headed off on another fun road trip. This time, we headed west to spend more time exploring and researching the mysterious ”Coast of Ghosts”, in particular, the Whatipu area. A place we’ve visited quite a few times through the years. A region of Auckland’s west coast that has seen much tragedy. Death, suicide, murder and New Zealand’s most significant maritime disaster, the sinking of the HMS Orpheus in 1863, killing 189 of the ship’s 259 crew members.
We wanted to revisit and spend more time in the allegedly haunted cave known to locals as the “dancefloor cave” due to its long history and many uses, including a hideaway party escape venue for young adults in the late 1800s. Complete with a large wooden stage, which has long since rotted away and been buried under a couple of meters of sand.
Further back in time, it was used by the early Maori community for housing, storage, and as a lookout point. There have been many reports coming from this one cave. From voices, singing, music, and screams being heard, shadows and apparitions, mysterious flitting lights, footsteps and even physical interactions.
Joining us for this one was our good friend Kingston, one of the Poly Paranormal Hunters team.
We hiked for miles, squeezed ourselves through tiny holes, overcame a fear or two, ate like kings, slept in tents, and left ourselves tired, sweaty, and achy in various parts of our bodies… but still happy and satisfied with our weekend’s achievements. Whatipu is an amazing region, with a very prehistoric look. (The Jurassic Park theme tune did come out as we hiked the trail; it seemed appropriate at the time)
Massive shout-out to Kingston for coming along on the adventure. Let’s link up again sometime soon. Here are a few photos we took.
