I tend to smudge my place every six months, and I feel like a weight has been lifted, and the house seems refreshed.
Background:
Smudging is a traditional practice used to cleanse a space of negative energy and promote positive energy by burning sacred herbs like sage, for example. To effectively smudge your house, you’ll need herbs, a fire-retardant container or shell, a lighter, and, optionally, a feather and a bowl of water or sand for extinguishing.
Steps to take:
- 1. Set Your Intention: Clarify your purpose for smudging. It may be a new house you are living in, after an illness, breakup etc or just a spring clean of unwanted energy.
- 2. Prepare the Space: Open windows.
- 3. Light the Herbs: Ignite the herbs, allowing them to smoulder. The smell can be quite strong for some.
- 4. Start Smudging: I normally smudge around myself first then move through the space preferably clockwise, directing smoke into corners and doorways. If someone else is home, I smudge around them too.
- 5. Use a Feather or Hand: Waft smoke as needed.
- 6. Speak Your Intention: You can also say a prayer or chant, whatever resonates with you and your purpose.
- 7. Complete the Process: Extinguish the herbs safely.
- 8. Reflect: See if it feels any different than before the smudge.
