Yay or Nay to the use of basic smartphone apps?

In the field of paranormal investigation, personal experiences and direct observations are often considered far more reliable than the use of general smartphone applications that claim to detect supernatural activity. Technology will always have an important place in paranormal research—devices such as EMF meters, thermal cameras, digital recorders, and environmental sensors can help document and analyse unusual events. However, many of the apps available on smartphones are not designed or calibrated for genuine investigative work. Instead, they are often created primarily for entertainment, relying on random word generators, simulated readings, or sensors that were never intended to detect paranormal phenomena.
Experienced investigators tend to place greater value on firsthand experiences because they involve direct interaction with the environment. Sensory awareness—such as sudden temperature changes, unexplained sounds, unusual smells, or visual anomalies—can provide meaningful context during an investigation. When these experiences are shared by multiple investigators at the same time, they can be compared and discussed, helping determine whether something unusual has truly occurred.
Another important factor is environmental awareness. Investigators who spend time in a location often learn how a building sounds, how air moves through it, and how external factors like traffic, wildlife, or weather can influence what is being experienced. Understanding these natural conditions helps investigators rule out normal explanations before considering something paranormal.
In contrast, most smartphone apps rely on built-in sensors such as microphones, magnetometers, or motion detectors. These components are designed for everyday functions like navigation or gaming, and can easily be affected by nearby electronics, signal interference, or normal environmental changes.
Of course, this perspective is only one person’s opinion—but it is an opinion shaped through experience in the field. Technology will always play a role in paranormal investigations, but experience, observation, and critical thinking remain the most reliable tools an investigator can have.
