Swinburn Cemetery – Central Otago

Located on Cemetery Road off the Kyeburn-Hyde Road /State Highway 87 is Swinburn/Kokonga Cemetery, a small rural cemetery bordered by mature pines.

While there is no settlement here, this is the resting place for early pioneers of this area and continues to be used today.

Nearby is the settlement of Kokonga, which the Taieri River winds through as well as the Otago Central Rail Trail. The name Kokonga means ‘bending river’ in Maori.

Inside the cemetery is a memorial to those who fought in the Great War as well as a good display of early gravestones.
