A father’s visit

I have always been very close to my father, even after he passed away.

I’m usually the last one to go to bed in our house due to my insomnia. Sometimes I find I just can’t sleep, so stay up and keep myself occupied by watching TV, reading, sewing and sometimes even vacuuming! One night I was up watching TV and suddenly felt uneasy. It was around midnight. As I was watching my program I noticed a light zip past the kitchen/hallway area at the corner of my eye. I sat and waited for it to happen again, just to see if it was my tired eyes playing tricks on me. It then happened again, this time at a slower speed and not at the corner of my eye but right in front of me.

At first I thought it was a fly being lit up by the bright TV screen so I stood up for a closer look and as I approached it, it disappeared right in front of me. I sat down to watch TV again. As I sat there I got the feeling I was being watched. I was really creeped out, which was unusual for me as I’m usually most comfortable at night-time by myself in the quiet. I decided it was time to go to bed (about 1am) so went to stand up to leave. Just as I leant forward  someone whispered loud and clear in my ear, “goodnight baby”. I spun around thinking it was my boyfriend but there was no one there! I remember, as it was said, my whole neck and shoulders were suddenly ice-cold and tingled, making me shudder. About a minute or two later it occurred to me that it had actually sounded like my father, and “goodnight baby” was what he would say to me every night as he kissed my cheek and I headed off to bed.

I felt a couple of other sensations like that through the following years, but that was the only one with spoken words. That one time was the one that meant the most.

Since then I have married my boyfriend, have two daughters and have a house of my own. I haven’t experienced those things since, but I always think back to it. It was a special moment that I’ll always cherish, because it was like he was still looking after me.

Love you Daddy.
